Participant Information Sheet

I would like to invite you to take part in a research project. Before you decide whether to take part it is important that you understand why the research is being done and what it will involve. Please take the time to read this carefully and ask the researcher if you have any questions.

What is the purpose of the study?
This study aims to investigate the relationship between different personality traits, academic performance and academic motivation within students at different levels of study.

Why have I been invited to take part?
You have received this invitation because you are a student which is the target audience for this research.

Do I have to take part?
No, it is completely up to you to decide whether or not you want to take part in this study. Please take your time to decide. You can decide not to take part or to withdraw from the study at any point until four weeks after the date you have taken part. If you wish to have your data withdrawn please contact the researcher with your participant identification number and your data will then be discarded. If you do decide to take part you will be asked to sign a consent form.

What will happen to me if I agree to take part?
If you agree to take part:
- You will be asked to fill out two questionnaires; one about personality and one about academic motivation in this online survey.
- It will take no longer than 15 minutes to take part.
- Your data will be recorded and stored safely from the online survey.

Are there any disadvantages or risks to taking part?
Taking part in this study will require you giving up 15 minutes of your time. The study is in the form of an online study so that it is easy to access, you can complete it at any time that suits you and takes as short a time as possible. You are also asked to state your overall academic grade performance, but you are not required to answer any questions you do not wish to answer.

If you feel you require any support you can contact someone about any queries or concerns you may have by email (studyskills@worc.ac.uk) or speak to someone at FirstPoint in the Peirson Building. The Student Counselling Service is also available to you and can be contacted by email (counselling@worc.ac.uk).

Will the information I give stay confidential?
Everything you say/report is confidential unless you tell us something that indicates that you or someone else is at risk of harm. We would discuss this with you before telling anyone else. The information you give may be used for a research report, but it will not be possible to identify you from the research report. You do not need to provide any personal details such as name and contact details, so this survey is completely anonymous. The data you do provide will be securely stored and kept for up to 6 months after the project ends in May 2015 and then securely disposed of. The research data (e.g. questionnaires) may be used for further research purposes.

What will happen to the results of the research study?
This research is being carried out as part of my Psychology Independent Study at the University of Worcester. The findings of this study will be reported as part of my dissertation and may also be published in academic journals or at conferences.

Who is organising the research?
This research has been approved by the University Of Worcester Institute Of Health Ethics Committee.
