Deadline: March 30, 2025

The Just1Mike Foundation is collaborating with Parent Heart Watch on Get Charged Up!, a program that models the importance of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and Cardiac Emergency Response Plans (CERP) wherever youth congregate.

Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) strikes 7,500-23,000 youth under age 18 each year. SCA is #1 killer of student athletes and the leading cause of death on school campuses, though most youth-serving facilities are under-prepared to respond to a cardiac emergency.

Parent Heart Watch is the only national organization solely dedicated to protecting children and young adults from sudden cardiac arrest and preventable sudden cardiac death. Its vision is to eliminate preventable deaths and disabilities from SCA in youth children and young adults.

As part of an American Heart Association task force, Parent Heart Watch joined administrators, educators, school nurses and other health and safety organizations to develop a CERP template that empowers organizations to make their facility heart safe.

School superintendents, teachers, coaches, school nurses, parents, youth organization leaders and local EMS can all participate in this program.

To register and for the possibility of winning an AED from the Get Charged Up just1mike! program you'll need to commit to the following and complete a short survey:

1) Obtain approval from facility administration to participate in the program.

2) Proper installation and registration of AED.

3) Understand that AED maintenance must be included in your facility's budget for replacement of batteries & pads to ensure readiness when needed.

4) Participation in a one-hour webinar orientation on Cardiac Emergency Response Plan (CERP) provided by the just1mike Foundation and Parent Heart Watch.

5) Implementation of the CERP with a step-by-step toolkit that establishes a simple system that prepares facility personnel to be first responders in the event of a cardiac emergency.

6) Understanding that part of the CERP requires that your designated Cardiac Emergency Response Team get CPR/AED certification training, which typically has an associated cost though could also be provided free of charge by your local EMS and/or Fire Rescue Department (CER Team members can also have been certified independently).

7) Dissemination of sudden cardiac awareness prevention information to your facility.

8) Provide final reports to the just1mike foundation on program status, and note that pictures shared could be posted on social media and used in digital communications to spread awareness of the program.

Thank you very much for your interest in championing sudden cardiac arrest prevention at your facility! We will notify you about next steps once all applications are reviewed.
