1. About You...

These questions are more about you and how you feel about your skills as a parent. They include the common parenting challenges when raising a child with CF. By the end of this class, you will have new ways to handle many of these issues.

2. Do you feel like you treat your child with CF the same as you do your other children?

Whenever possible, I treat my children the same and have similar expectations for all of them.

Sometimes I find myself setting lower expectations for my CF child or giving him/her special treatment.

I almost always feel guilty or bad for my child with CF and treat him/her differently.

3. Are you proud of your coping skills when you having problems?

Yes, I have worked at this and am mostly in control of my frustration and problem-solving efforts.

Coping is a work in progress for me. Sometimes I can discuss and problem-solve in a calm way. Other times, I lash out or am self-destructive.

No, when I am frustrated, I often seek escape in unhealthy ways: alcohol or other substances and/or I let my feelings spill onto people around me, snapping at small things, shouting or bringing up old grievances.

4. Do you take care of yourself?

Yes, I make time to maintain friendships/my spousal relationship, and I also take time for myself to be alone or pursue interests outside my children.

I have some release from parenting burnout with relationships or hobbies, but not very often or for long enough to feel truly refreshed.

Never, I have little time or energy for my partner, friends, hobbies or interests. I feel as though everything is on me and if I let go of my control, everything will fall apart.

5. How do you feel about your overall parenting skills?

I feel that I have an effective set of skills to raise my children.

It is hit or miss whether I can command the respect of my children, solve problems with them, share control with them, and deal with difficult times.

I find myself nagging, bribing, threatening and lecturing. I feel like their behavior is out of my control.

9. How are you doing on transitioning your child with CF to self care and responsibility for his or her healthcare regimen?

We are always thinking up ways to make our child more knowledgeable and involved in his or her care.

More responsibility for my child is a goal, but I have trouble letting go of my control. I am afraid and/or impatient with my child’s efforts to do things on his or her own.

I am 100% responsible for my child’s care regimen and have no plans to change this.
