South Shore High School Proposed Name Change to Willie T Barrow

During the November 19, 2015 South Shore International College Prep Local School Council meeting, notice of an organized movement to change the name of the school was brought to the floor. The proposed name change is Willie T. Barrow, a co-founder of Operation Push with Rev. Jesse L. Jackson and others. The proposal is being brought forward by a local neighborhood group. The members of the group are alleged to have no ties to South Shore High School. The group has REGULAR ATTENDANCE at the local school council meeting. They were not present at the meeting at the time notice was made public. A LSC committee is being established to address the name change issue. The committee will consist of school administrators, students, parents and alumni. Meetings will be held in the near future to consider testimony for and against the proposed name change. The LSC will make a recommendation to the Chicago Public Schools, Board of Education. The LSC recommendation has influence over the Board of Education. The Board of Education will make the FINAL DECISION.
