What is the Youth Advisory Council (YAC) for the Bass Coast Shire Council and YES Youth Hub?

The YAC is a newly established advisory group of young people who are connected to Bass Coast and are passionate about making a difference in the local community. The YAC acts as a channel through which young people can formally communicate with Council in a way that is meaningful and recognises the value of their voices and lived experiences. The YAC will play a key role in driving the YES Youth Hub (Youth Hub). As this is the YAC's first year, members will also spend time shaping relevant format and processes to ensure the YAC is effective and meaningful.

What are the roles and responsibilities of a YAC member?

Represent. As a member of the YAC, your role is to act as a representative for youth in your local community. You will advocate for issues that are important and relevant to young people on behalf of the young people of Bass Coast.

Influence. The YAC acts as an advisory group to Council and the Youth Hub. This means that YAC members provide their advice and unique insight into issues that are relevant to local young people and to the Bass Coast community. Council and the Youth Hub will then consider whatever input the YAC gives in their decision-making.

Inform. YAC members will work together to identify local issues and provide suggestions to Council, Youth Hub and the community on how to address them.

Inspire. YAC members will also be involved in planning community events in Bass Coast.

In 2021, YAC members will be appointed for an eight-month term (April to November 2021). Meetings will occur on the last Thursday of each month for one and a half hours. Meetings will be face to face with online attendance available. Meetings will be in Wonthaggi with other locations to be decided in conjunction with the YAC members.  Members will be required to attend the meetings.

Successful applicants will be provided with training that will help prepare them for this role.

Am I eligible?

To apply for a YAC role, you must be 12 to 25 years old and have a strong connection to Bass Coast (work, study, live or spend time in Bass Coast).

In addition to this, you must be able to show that you have an interest or experience in creating a positive impact in the community. This could include current or recent volunteer, work or leadership experience.

You must also be willing to work within the group guidelines and code of conduct that will be established by the YAC, in conjunction with Council and the Youth Hub.

How do I apply?

The application process is easy! Simply fill out the application form below. It should take about 20 minutes to complete.
