Montgomery County Emergency Service, a non-profit, psychiatric response center located on the grounds of Norristown State Hospital, is in the process of creating a plan for its future, a document that will provide direction and guidance to MCES. MCES, founded in 1974, currently operates the following services:
• Psychiatric EMS unit including 10 Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs), cross-trained as psychiatric technicians.
• Crisis Intervention Specialist (CIS) training program, which began training police officers in 1975 on mental illness and psychiatric emergency response.
• 73-bed secure, inpatient hospital that, stabilizes, treats, supports and educates.
• 8-bed Crisis Residential Program (CRP) located on the grounds of Norristown State Hospital.
• Outpatient clinic providing forensic consultations, medication management, therapy, with a focus on needs of individuals with developmental disabilities.
• Case Management staff who work with people with mental illness who may have criminal charges, some of whom are homeless or are at risk of homelessness.
• 24/7/365 walk-in crisis center – serves approximately 2,000 individuals annually, staffed with a psychiatrist at all times.
• 24/7/365 crisis call center, which is part of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline – serves approximately 4,500 individuals annually.
