1. Welcome and Information

Thank you for taking the time to complete this survey. Your feedback will help us to shape a new resource for family, whānau, friends, teachers and others, who support young people, to enable them to feel more  confident to have safe conversations about suicide.

Research has shown that young people often talk about suicide with their peers, yet find this topic difficult to discuss with adults. We know they have these conversations in person, via text and on social media. Conversations about suicide may be in response to the loss of someone they know, or an acquaintance or a person not known to them personally, such as someone within their community. They may be around a suicide theme in a TV show or news of a celebrity death. Or they may be related to their own thoughts or feelings about suicide, or a friend they are supporting. Young people may want to talk about suicide, and they may need advice or support to look after themselves or a friend.

It can be hard to have these conversations, and some adults find it difficult to talk about suicide with young people. Suicide affects us all in different ways, and people may not feel confident to discuss suicide in a way that is safe, helpful and promotes suicide prevention.

Before beginning the survey, we want to acknowledge that thinking about and discussing suicide can be upsetting.  If you feel that you need more information about suicide or need to speak to someone regarding this topic, here are some links and phone numbers to call.
