Community Resilience Model (CRM) - What it is and Why it works: September 21st
CRM’s goal is to educate and create trauma and resiliency informed and focused communities that share a common understanding of the impact of stress and trauma on the nervous system. Laurie Strand, licensed clinical social worker and CRM trainer, will summarize how through this skills-based approach, an individual’s nervous system can become regulated, and resilience can be restored, increased, and strengthened and stronger more resilient communities created. In addition, CRM wellness skills that participants can readily practice will be introduced.

According to some estimates, appointment requests for mental health therapies have increased more than 50% nationwide over this past year, including an increase in requests from adolescents and those wanting therapy for the first time. Many individuals seeking therapy are finding that therapists are not taking new clients or that there is a lengthy wait for an appointment. Alison Burpee, licensed clinical social worker at St. Luke’s Clinic – Mental Health Services, will address what might be causing the surge of mental health needs (not just pandemic related), why your therapist might not be able to fit you in, and skills you can practice while you wait for your appointment.

Get Outside: Why Getting Outdoors Can Help Your Wellbeing: October 5th
Lyle Nelson knows this topic well. Not only has he had a long, vibrant career as a community health expert, he has been a world class athlete having competed as a biathlete in four Olympic Games. Mr. Nelson continues to be a fascinated student of the outdoors and will share his passion and scientific evidence about the potential health benefits of being outdoors. He will explain how being outside can revitalize our minds and bodies regardless of our age and fitness level. The outdoors can reduce feelings of stress and anxiety by decreasing fight or flight hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline, and may increase the feel-good hormones such as serotonin, dopamine, and endorphins. Join in and gain inspiration and motivation to step outside.

2022 Winter Health Forecast: Facts, Guesses & Prevention Preparation: October 19th
While we are all hoping that COVID and all the variants will be waning by the time winter arrives, there are still many unknowns. In addition, winter is notorious for the spread of contagious illnesses such as colds, influenza, stomach bugs and strep throat, so understanding risks and prevention is essential in supporting healthy communities. Julie Lyons, MD, family medicine, will offer information based on science and evidence as well as what she does in her practice to help her patients make informed decisions, take appropriate precautions, and recognize and take care of any winter bugs that might come along.

Robert Jackson, MD, urologist, hopes this gets your attention: The average lifespan of men in America is five years less than that of women and men are at a much higher risk than women for death from diseases such as cancer, heart disease, lung disease and diabetes and for death by suicide. Dr. Jackson will share what he has learned through research and in his practice about what might be biologic, physical, emotional, social, and cultural reasons behind these statistics and what men can do to make positive changes in their health risks.
