Hello CCNC Members,

Municipal cultural planners are a passionate group, and this is your chance to raise awareness of culture’s role in building liveable, sustainable, and vibrant cities (and communities).

CCNC’s board executive has been invited to participate on a panel on a radio call in show (the exact date is TBD so stay tuned). The discussion will be surrounding the value of cities having cultural hubs and districts.

To prepare for the call, we turn to you, our members, to complete a short survey so that we can compile research to share with the audience.

Please note: The numbers will be reported at an aggregate level (you and your city will not be quoted). We will compile the results of this survey and share them with our members (names/ cities will not be cited). This survey is not limited to one person at a city and it will not represent the view of your city; the opinions you share are your own anonymous and personal opinions.

If you would like to table your city’s cultural hub / district as a possible case study or example, please contact ali.sabourin@hamilton.ca.

In order to give some context, below is the Department of Canadian Heritage's definition and descriptions of Cultural Hubs and Cultural Districts:

Department of Canadian Heritage describes cultural hubs as multi-tenant facilities involving cultural participants from a range of sectors and disciplines and may include features such as (a) shared space, technology, and resources; (b) collaboration and exchange of ideas; (c) public access and programming, all with the ultimate aim of encouraging innovation and productivity.

The Department of Canadian Heritage defines a cultural district as a well-recognized, branded, mixed use area where a high concentration of cultural facilities serve as an anchor of attraction. Facilities include amenities like performance spaces, museums, galleries, artist studios, arts-related shops, music or media production studios, dance studios, colleges for the arts, libraries, arboretums, and gardens. Because they are mixed use developments, cultural districts incorporate other facilities, such as office complexes, retail spaces, and occasionally residential areas.

Please take 5 minutes to complete this 10 question survey so that we can best represent the views of our nation’s cultural planners.

Thank you for taking the time to complete the survey. The deadline for responses is Friday, June 14th.
