Inflammatory Bowel Disease Preventative Checklist
Patients with inflammatory Bowel Disease require special attention to preventative health. This includes cancer screening, bone health and vaccination. This checklist is for you to review with your gastroenterologist and primary care physician.
1.
Osteoporosis Screening
Many IBD patients are at increased risk for bone loss (osteoporosis). If you have ANY of the following criteria, then you should ask your doctor about screening you for osteoporosis:
Older than 60
Post-menopausal women
Have had 3 months of steroid treatment in your life (Prednisone or other corticosteroid)
Currently taking prednisone or other corticosteroid
Had bone fractures

Colon cancer screening is critical for patients with IBD but screening for other cancers also needs to be considered . Have you been screened for the following cancers?
Skin cancer
Cervical cancer (pap smears)
Breast cancer
I have not been screened for any other cancers.

Have you been vaccinated for Influenza (Flu) in the past 10 months?

4.
Have you ever been vaccinated for Pneumonia (PCV 13 and PPSV 23)? All adult IBD patients should consider this vaccine. This is usually given as the PCV 13 vaccine followed by the PPSV 23 Vaccine 2 to 12 months later.

Have been vaccinated for Shingles (Herpes Zoster)? IBD patients over 50 years of age should consider this vaccine.

6.
Have you ever had chickenpox or had the varicella vaccine? All IBD patients who have not been exposed to varicella should consider the vaccine before starting biologic therapy.

Are you up to date on your tetanus vaccine? (TDAP vaccine is recommended for all adults). If you have received this as a child, then a booster should be repeated every ten years.

Have you been vaccinated for Hepatitis B infection? This vaccine is a series of three injections and immunity against Hepatitis B should be checked prior to starting biologic therapy for IBD.

Have you been vaccinated for Hepatitis A? This is usually a two-dose vaccine given 6 to 12 months apart.

Have you been vaccinated for human papilloma virus (HPV)? All people between the ages of 11 and 26 should consider this vaccine.
