The Mission of FOCUSS is to assist ethnic minority students to discover sustainable solutions that will benefit society.

The goal of FOCUSS is to provide direction to ethnic minority students regarding the commercialization of an innovation or discovery. Idea Competitions have been established at many of the Country’s leading Universities and Colleges. Institutions that are being considered for this competition are asked to complete the following questionnaire.

Academic Advisors’/Coaches’ Responsibilities

FOCUSS is about the students’ experience. Participating students win or lose on their own merits. But given the nature of this opportunity for discovery, participating schools are expected to provide assistance via academic advisors/coaches to competing students.

Note, all Academic Advisors are paid a stipend for services rendered.

- Serve as the primary point-of-contact for the Idea Competition

- Oversee the process of promoting the event and identify capable students

- Ensure that the participating students have guidance regarding their proposed solution to the problem statement

- Meet with students to discuss the problem statement, clarify understanding of the facts, address any contextual matters that you deem important, and participate in a general discussion of the problem

- Guide students to move into analysis and planning of response to the facts surrounding the problem and proposed solution

- Provide students with advice and support in developing their responses and presentations
