If everyone loves a winner, why do we root for the underdog?

Although it may seem counterintuitive, according to psychologists, people often choose to root for the underdog, and love a story about an underdog winning in the face of adversity. Most people have been underdogs at some point in their lives, so when they see an underdog triumph, it gives them hope that effort, hard work, and sheer ambition can win against immense difficulty.

Did you know?

The term “underdog” comes from English dogfighting in the 19th century. The loser was the dog that ended up under the winner, which was referred to as the “top dog.”
