About the Program

KAFP is excited to build upon our Faces in Family Medicine program for the 2016-17 Academic year!  This year we will host dinner for pre-med students at Kansas State University in addition to our annual meals with each of the three KUMC campuses.

This innovative program exposes pre-med and medical students to the many Faces in Family Medicine through both group and one-on-one mentorship opportunities.  KAFP members are encouraged to volunteer as mentors and represent the broad scope and modes of practice in the state of Kansas.  Eligible student applicants are identified as: students in their first and second year of medical school, and pre-med students in their junior and senior years of undergraduate studies.  The ultimate goal is to expose the students to the many different, energetic, vibrant, and authentic “faces” of family medicine, and promote the selection of family medicinal as their specialty.

One-on-One Mentoring:
Based on responses received via applications, physicians and students will be paired up for the 2016-17 academic year.  Mentors and mentees are encouraged to communicate via email, Facebook, phone, text message, and even face to face on topics relevant to family medicine.  New this year, KAFP will provide various conversation starter topics via Facebook and email to stimulate conversation surrounding current events and trends in the specialty.  Communication may be as frequent as the pairing wishes, and mentors will commit to reaching out at least quarterly.

Group Mentorship Dinner:
KAFP will host a group mentorship dinner at each of the four participating campuses.  At this dinner, physicians will rotate around the room “speed dating” style speaking with each table of students and share their “face” of the specialty.
