Giving Back to the Community is Part of Our Mission

Alternatives Federal Credit Union (AFCU) is a member-owned financial cooperative that invests profits back into the hands of members and communities we serve. Because we are also a non-profit, we have a limited budget for donations. However, we give back when we can for projects and programs aligned with our mission.

Whereas we would like to fulfill each and every request for support, it's not possible for us to do so. We therefore limit donations to organizations and initiatives that reflect our mission and the best interests of the members we serve. Whereas these guidelines will not cover every possibility, special need or opportunity, we also reserve the right to make exceptions while considering the purpose for making donations.

In order to be eligible, your request must meet the following criteria:

  • Requests must be in writing and submitted via this online form, only.
  • Your application must be received at least 60 days prior to your event, so that our review committee has time to assess your application.
  • We're particularly interested in funding programs, projects, and non-profit organizational requests that align with our mission.
  • Our mission is to build wealth and create economic opportunity for underserved people and communities. We work hard to achieve this goal through educational community programs, an engaging member experience, and Alternatives Federal Credit Union members are prioritized, but non-members have also received funding in the past, as we find this often leads to a broader understanding of our mission in the communities we serve.
  • Preference will be given to the types of contributions that impact large portions of the communities AFCU serves and/or those organizations and entities that are members of AFCU, though we have funded non-member organizations and entities that align with our mission.
  • Only one request per organization or entity will be considered during any 12 month period.


The Process:

You will receive notification once your request is processed. All decisions are final and are not subject to appeal. Due to the volume of requests we receive, we are not able to explain in detail why a request is denied, but we do invite you to apply again in the next year (cycle).

Please be advised that we will not fund the following:
  • Individual fundraising efforts or initiatives.
  • Activities, groups or events outside of the geographic areas that AFCU serves.
  • Projects whose primary purpose is legislative or political and/or are designed to influence legislation or elect candidates to public office.
  • Any organizations that discriminate on the basis of race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, or national origin.
  • General endowment funding.
  • Telephone solicitations.
  • For-profit organizations.
