For long-standing service and commitment to the conservation movement

This award is given to an individual who has been actively involved in the conservation movement for many years, made a constant and invaluable contribution to the environment, and has displayed qualities of integrity, reliability and commitment, honouring Allen Strom.

Allen Strom (1914 – 1997) devoted much of his life to the establishment of many national parks and nature reserves and was Chair of the NSW Fauna Protection Panel and a trustee for the Bouddi National Park. On the NSW Central Coast, he promoted the establishment of Brisbane Water National Park, Wyrrabalong National Park, Wamberal Lagoon Nature Reserve and Cockle Bay Nature Reserve. Allen was a founding member of a number of environmental groups, including the Gosford District Environmental Foundation and the Caloola Club. He was a driving force behind the proposal for Gosford Council to have its first environmental officer in 1986. He was one of the driving forces behind the setting up of the Nature Conservation Council in 1955.

Evaluation criteria:

Nominees must have upheld one or more of the following principles of conservation:

1. The protection of the environment through advocating for the conservation of resources. 
2. The protection of the environment through creative campaigning. 
3. Protecting of communities from harmful pollution or inappropriate development.
4. Empowering and organisating individuals and groups to protect the environment.

Additional criteria for evaluation are:

1. Length of environmental activism
2. Level (degree) of activity
3. Effectiveness in environmental awareness raising
4. Sustaining involvement until conclusion of campaign/s
5. Networking and co-operation with other conservation groups

Please note that current NCC employees and members of the Executive are not eligible to be nominated for this award. The award will be presented at the NSW Environment Awards on the evening of Saturday 20th October 2018.
