Community Input Sessions Questions

Thank you for taking time to provide us with input on the Peer Support Specialist Certification program. The following questions are broken out into different sections depending on the topic area. As noted throughout the presentations, there are areas that have been set in regulation under Senate Bill 803 and/or as a state standard by the Department of Health Care Services where changes are not permissible by the California Mental Health Services Authority (CalMHSA). CalMHSA is developing and implementation a Peer Support Specialist Certification program as outlined by the Department of Health Care Services on behalf of interested counties. You may choose to provide feedback on some or all topic areas.

Training - we are gathering input on training that leads towards Peer Support Specialist Certification exam based on the 17-core competencies.

Examination - Standardized examinations will be developed using an exam developer(s) and subject matter experts in the field of peer work. The examinations have not yet been developed, therefore, the content, number of questions, or length of time to take the examination are not available at this time.

* 3. Following the completion of peer training, how much time may an individual have to initiate an exam? ​

* 4. What might be a reasonable number of times that an individual may be able to retake the exam, after un unsuccessful attempt? ​

Input/Feedback for: Grandparenting - Continued Education (CE): 20 hours
The “Grandparenting” term is used in lieu of the more common, grandfathering, term. Grandparenting is the method that may be used for Peer Support Specialist Certification when certain conditions are met for individuals who are doing peer support work today. We are looking for input on continued education requirement.

The “Grandparenting” term is used in lieu of the more common, grandfathering, term. Grandparenting is the method that may be used for Peer Support Specialist Certification when certain conditions are met for individuals who are doing peer support work today. Under the grandparenting clause, there are several requirements that must be met including the requirement that a person must have “completion of training, letters of recommendation, and pass the Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialist exam.” Below, we are looking specifically gathering information on the “completion of training” requirement.

Input/feedback for: Specializations
For this section we are gathering information on the specializations for Parent, Caregiver, & Family Member Peer, Peer for persons in “Crisis,” Peer for person who are “Unhoused”, Peer for persons who are “Justice Involved.” Of note, the Parent, Caregiver, and Family Member Peer specialization will be implemented with the initial launch of the program. The “Crisis,” “Unhoused,” and “Justice Involved,” specializations are expected to be implemented by January 1, 2023.
