Pest Management Issues Survey |
Tell us about your issues with declared pests in the Shire of Morawa
This survey is a follow-up to the recent community meeting regarding Pest Management in the Shire held on 16th March 2017.
The meeting was held to discuss managing declared pest species such as feral pigs and wild dogs.
Landholders/Farmers in Morawa have the opportunity to become involved in a process to become part of a Recognised Biosecurity Group (RBG).
There are currently 6 in the Rangelands area of the State and 5 in the South West Land Division.
Recognised Biosecurity Groups currently have the capacity to consider raising a Declared Pest Rate – which the WA Government will match $ for $. This allows group to achieve long term sustainability and local management of declared pests.
There are additional benefits in becoming an RBG including recognised legitimacy, locally driven awareness-raising of pest management, advocating, opportunity to attract additional funds, work with local communities and shires, collaboration with grower and NRM groups to manage pests and coordinate management options such as aerial baiting with DPAW.
The Shire of Morawa is taking a leadership role in surveying our community to determine how landholders might choose to proceed. It should be noted that the Shire itself is a stakeholder in this process as we have to manage declared pests on our own lands.
The closest RBG to Morawa is currently the Central Wheatbelt Biosecurity Association and includes the Shires of Perenjori, Dalwallinu and Koorda.
Morawa has the opportunity to request admission to the CWBA in a carefully managed and transparent process.
Morawa would need to ensure additional pests such as Feral pigs were an agreed priority with the group.
In order to assist with progressing this, please answer the following questions.
