2023 Public Policy Fellowship Legislator Interest Form - Rolling Application

First Alaskans Institute (FAI) is pleased to announce its 2023 Public Policy Fellowship (PPF) to place Alaska Native and rural Alaskans in Juneau during the 2023 Legislative Session. The goal for the PPF is for Fellows to become familiar with the legislative process; understand the history of Alaska Native people; learn and use the skills of past, present and future leadership; and understand the evolving issues that confront Alaska Natives and the State of Alaska. Participants will have hands-on experience working with the legislative and political process, and create a real-time two-way flow of information between the Alaska State Capitol and our Alaska Native communities.

If your office is interested in learning from the knowledge and experience of our Alaska Native and rural Alaskan Fellows and supporting the further development of Alaska's leaders, then we invite you to employ a fellow. Placement will be based on the experience, interests and needs of our Fellows and Legislators.

Timeline:

Placement with Host Legislative Office Finalized: Wednesday, December 20, 2022
Placement with Legislative Office during 2022 Alaska State Legislature 1st Regular Session: January 12 – April 18, 2023

Legislator and/or Legislative office responsibilities:

Provide office work space for the Fellow January 12 – April 18, 2023;
Provide on the job training as needed;
Provide meaningful work experience;
Designate a supervisor for day-to-day interaction and program coordination;
Allow the Fellow to participate in monthly check in calls between FAI and the Fellow;
Allow Fellow to engage in research of Alaska Native issues relevant to the office needs;
Evaluate work performance of the Fellow;
Work with FAI staff to schedule a site visit in February (in person or virtually);
Contact FAI immediately with any concerns or problems as they arise.

First Alaskans Institute’s responsibilities:

Recruit, screen, interview and hire Fellows;
Assume all liabilities as employer of record for the Fellow such as workers comp;
Provide an orientation before session starts;
Provide the Fellow a round-trip ticket to Juneau, monthly living stipend and daily stipend;
Work with Legislator office and the Fellow to create and revise the scope of work as needed;
Provide advice and support to Fellow in contacting leaders in Alaska Native politics and education as part of their research projects;
Conduct monthly check-in phone calls and a February site visit with Fellow to review successes and challenges;
Discuss performance challenges and mediate discrepancies as needed;
Conduct debriefing session at the end of the Fellowship.
