Marine Education and Research Society
Thank you very much for your interest in our educational resources aimed at being highly engaging and entertaining while having the strong potential to reduce threats to marine life and boaters.
Upon completion of this request form, passwords will be provided to two videos of MERS webinars filmed in September 2020:
1) "The Return of Giants"
A presentation on our Humpback Whales research including population studies, feeding strategies, and rate of entanglement. Includes essential boater* information about how to avoid collision and what to do, and not to do, if entanglement is witnessed. There is also a focus on the importance of citizen science to whale research and conservation.
2) "Boaters* and Marine Mammals - Safety and Stewardship"
This covers the boater education content originally developed for the Canadian Power and Sail Squadron (see the boater education guide at www.BoatBlue.ca). The aims include empowering boaters to increase aquatic stewardship and responsibility.
Topics include the positive contributions boaters can make to conservation and research, such as reducing the impacts of:
- acoustic and physical disturbance,
- collision, and
- marine debris.
There is a stronger focus on the Marine Mammal Regulations and boater best practices than in the other presentation.
*Boater = references all watercraft users - motorized, sail, paddle boards, kayaks and canoes.
By filling in the details in this form, you are helping us know what audiences the videos are reaching and what the potential conservation gains of the videos may be. We ask please that the passwords we provide are not shared with others but rather that they too fill in a request form.
Note that it is also possible to request a webinar specifically for your group - see the link at www.mersociety.org/presentations.
