Producing and reading mathematical content has previously been challenging without human intervention to interpret the notation.
However, MathCAT (Math Capable Assistive Technology) is a free open-source library that allows existing assistive technologies to present mathematical content as high-quality speech and braille output, and provides intuitive navigation within mathematical expressions. The library supports multiple languages and braille codes, with ongoing community contributions expanding its reach and capabilities.

MathCAT has become a vital tool and is already integrated into leading tools, including:
- Reading tools: including Dolphin EasyReader App, EDR Labs Thorium Reader, Kurzweil 3000
- Screenreaders: including JAWS, NVDA, Dolphin ScreenReader and Dolphin SuperNova, Orca
- Productivity tools: including MS Word and MS PowerPoint
- Production and converter tools: including APH BrailleBlaster, DAISY Pipeline, Sao Mai Braille Converter, and Textalk Webarch. Agencies such as MTM in Sweden and the National Library of Norway integrate tools like these into their workflows, to produce books containing mathematical content in accessible text-to-speech and braille formats.
We are conducting this survey to gather essential information about producing and reading accessible mathematical content.
The findings of this survey will provide us with valuable insights that will enable us to make informed decisions about projects including the MathCAT Initiative.
