Thank you for your interest in the SIU Carbondale Extern Program!

History
Established in 1984, the Extern Program provides students with professional experience in their chosen career fields. Each year,  SIU students are matched with SIU alumni to complete externships throughout the U.S. This allows them to apply skills learned in the classroom to a professional work environment. The program is designed to give students hands-on experience to enhance their classroom education.

Details
The Extern Program is a volunteer program. Students are not paid, nor do they receive credit for participating in the experience. However, sponsors are welcome to provide financial assistance to help students pay for costs they may incur.

The 2023 Extern Program takes place between March 11-19, 2023. Externships are typically one work week, but exact dates and times can be determined by the sponsor and student.

On the fence?  Some advice from last years sponsors!
  • Do it! You'll get as much out of it as the externs do.
  • It was an easy, worthwhile process.
  • Really listen to what the extern is wanting to learn about and try and tailor an experience that fits what they are interested in. Job shadowing is always a good resource and then you can show what your company does and introduce/network with the student
  • Just be yourself! Most students have no idea what our job entails once in the real world so I think being authentic with them is important. Don't get hung up on trying to make sure their experience is jam packed with exciting and pretty things, sometimes what we do isn't pretty and fun! And that's ok!
  • Go for it.  Ask what the extern wants out of the experience.
  • Make sure you have a proper amount of time set aside to introduce your extern to your organization.
  • Don't feel that you have to occupy every moment with activities. Sometimes it is worthwhile to sit and visit with the extern, share your experiences in the working world, and listen to their experiences. Give a variety of experiences. You never know what one thing is going to spark an interest.
