My name is Bill Black and I am thrilled that you are taking this Questionnaire! I have over 25 years experience working with owners of privately-held businesses, addressing planning issues that are unique to them: Succession, Exit and Transition (SET) planning.
While working in these areas, I help clients develop a complete plan focusing on the business owner’s personal needs and goals.
Before you begin to fill out this Questionnaire, let me share just a bit of what statistics tell me about you.
• As one of the 9.5 million business owners in the United States, you are likely to be over 45 years old.
• According to a 2005 Pricewaterhouse Coopers’ survey of companies in the $5 million to $150 million of value range, there’s a 2 in 3 chance that you plan to leave your company within the next 10 years.
• Yet, only 22 percent report having done any succession planning.
• Exiting your business will be one of the biggest financial events of your life. Have you prepared your business so you can leave it on your own terms –
(a) when you want,
(b) with the amount of money you need to live comfortably in the post-life, and
(c) to whom you want (children, key employees or third party)?
Make no mistake, the decisions involved in exiting your business must be informed, correct and yours, not your advisors’. After all, this is the biggest transaction in your life; the decisions you make will affect, probably deeply, the course of the balance of your life.
