Thank you for participating in the City of Eureka's Construction & Demolition Waste Research Survey. This information along with other research efforts will be used to develop strategies to reduce construction waste in Eureka and work towards sustainable materials management as part of the city’s Zero Waste Action Plan.
Zero Waste is a shift in waste management from a linear to a circular economy where we can recover all resources and send nothing to the landfill. Zero Waste sees a value in all materials even when they are not realized.
The C&D portion of the Zero Waste Action Plan will focus on the expansion of resources and industry support to sustainably divert C&D waste materials from the landfill. It is intended to help make disposal easier for the industry while working to meet waste reduction goals.
As of the 2021 HWMA waste characterization study, 73% of C&D materials sent to the landfill in Humboldt are considered potentially recoverable. The top 3 materials are Asphalt Composition Shingles, Wood Waste, and Clean Pallets. The City of Eureka staff are using the 2021 waste characterization study to inform what materials to target, and have analyzed the city’s current efforts. In addition, the state mandates (through the CalGreen Building Code) that 65% of C&D waste must be recycled or reused through the jurisdiction's building permit process.
This survey is estimated to take 10 minutes.
