Dear Potential Participant,

We are requesting your participation in a study entitled, Factors Influencing Students' Academic Performance When Entering University. The primary purpose of this research is to gain further insight into the initial experiences of students who transfer from college to university, including both potential barriers as well as resources for success. We are also interested in how transferring from college to university might influence students’ academic performance and adjustment.

As a participant, you will be invited to complete the following:
  • An online questionnaire (included in this link; approximately 10 minutes)
  • A focus group interview (approximately 1 hour; optional)

Participants in either the questionnaire and/or focus group will be entered into a draw to win 1 of 15 $100 Amazon giftcards. Participants will receive an additional entry for each portion of the study completed.

What information will I be asked to share?

The questionnaires will request demographic information (e.g., age, gender, ethnicity) as well as information about your academic experience (e.g., school attended, academic discipline, grades).

The focus group will ask you about your experience transferring from college to university (e.g., similarities, differences, challenges, resources).

You are free to decline answering any questions asked in the questionnaires or focus group.

What are the risks of participating?

There are no direct risks of participating in this study; however, you will be asked to share information about your personal experience as a student.

What if I want to withdraw from the study?

Participation is entirely voluntary. You are under no obligation to participate in this study and are free to withdraw at any time until submission of the data by informing the research team verbally or in writing. Your decision to participate will not affect your academic status in any way.

How will my data be stored?

Data obtained through the questionnaires and focus groups will be accessible only to members of the research team. The researchers intend to publish the results of this study as well as present it at a conference; however, participants’ confidentiality will be maintained, and no personal identifiers will be used. The data will be stored electronically for a minimum of 5 years in accordance with Lakehead University protocol.

How can I receive a copy of the results?

Participants can request an electronic copy of the results to be emailed upon completion of the study.

Your participation in this research is valuable. Understanding the successes and challenges experienced by students is important for developing resources that could improve the retention, performance, and overall experience of students. As a student, your insight will make a significant contribution to this study.
