Ending the Epidemics in Indian Country
Welcome & Contact Information
Purpose:
As we emerge from COVID, the US as a whole and Indian Country, in particular, are seeing surges in the ‘syndemic’ of interrelated disease states of HIV, sexually transmitted infections, hepatitis C virus, and substance use disorder. We can reduce the incidence and impact of the syndemic via policy and practice modifications that fit the context of each community and health facility. These options include expanded screening, amplifying the roles of nursing and pharmacy staff, informatics solutions on the electronic health record, and more. The Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board offers a one-time series to address the syndemic. The series, funded by the Minority HIV/AIDS Fund, will provide an overview and present implementation options, and where requested, assist with implementation. The series is not only informational—technical and other support needed to put policy and practice into place is available and encouraged. Jorge Mera, MD, Indian Country ECHO Medical Director, will lead our faculty. Dr. Mera has worked on all aspects of the syndemic as Director of Infectious Diseases for Cherokee Nation. The NPAIHB provides CMEs.
