INFORMED CONSENT
You are being asked to participate in a research study about the relationship of emotional labor and the employment experiences of employees of not-for-profit human services organizations. The researcher is required to provide an information sheet such as this one to tell you about the research, to explain that taking part is voluntary, to describe the risks and benefits of participation, and to help you to make an informed decision. You should feel free to ask the researcher any questions you may have.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

You are being asked to participate in a research study about the relationship of emotional labor and the employment experiences of employees of not-for-profit human services organizations. The research is also looking into the relationship of demographic factors on emotional labor and how that may also relate to employee experiences. Your participation in this research is voluntary. Your decision whether or not to participate will not affect your current or future dealings with your current or future employer, or with Wilmington University. If you decide to participate, you are free to withdraw at any time without affecting that relationship.

PROCEDURES
If you agree and are eligible to participate in this study, you will rate your experiences of emotional labor, and answer demographic questions. You will complete an online survey using the GNM Emotional Labor Questionnaire with demographic questions about your gender identity, age, years of job role service, job role in human services, and whether or not your agency serves adults and/or children. Completing the survey will take approximately 15-20 minutes.

ELIGIBILITY

To participate in this study, you must (1) be 18 years old or older, (2) actively employed by a not-for-profit human services agency that provides service to Intellectually/developmentally or psychiatrically disabled people (3) have an active agency email address (4) currently work in the state of NY.

POTENTIAL RISKS

To the best of the researcher's knowledge, participation in the survey will bring you no more risk of harm than you would experience in your everyday life. You may experience mild discomfort because the researcher is asking you to recall experiences in the workplace which may have involved your emotions. Because online privacy can never be fully guaranteed, there is the risk that a breach of privacy (others may know that you are participating in research) and confidentiality (identifiable data could be accidentally disclosed) could occur. The data collected will be reported in aggregate, so as not to identify individual participants.


POTENTIAL BENEFITS

This study is not designed to benefit you personally. This study is designed to learn more about emotional labor and the dimensions of employment experiences for employees of not-for-profit human services agencies. The study results may be used to help other people in the future.

PARTICIPATION AND WITHDRAWAL

Your participation in this research is voluntary. You have the option to not participate in this study. You may withdraw from the study, for any reason, at any time, without consequence.
PRIVACY AND CONFIDENTIALITY

Your participation in this research study is confidential. You will not be personally identified as a research subject. The researcher will not release information about you to your employer. Online privacy can never be fully guaranteed by the researcher. However, your privacy and confidentiality will be protected to the extent that it is technologically possible.


INCENTIVES TO PARTICIPATE (OPTIONAL)

You have the option of entering a raffle to win a prize.

The researcher will be conducting a random drawing for a $50.00 Amazon gift card.  Since the survey is anonymous, you must do the following to enter the raffle:
  • Print the “Thank You” page of the survey showing it is complete (none of your answers or personal information will be on this page).
  • Print your name and phone number on the printed survey page so it is clear that you participated in the study.
  •  Scan and email this document to :EmotionalLaborResearchRaffle@yahoo.com
  • Please note that if you are selected as the winner of the raffle, you will need to provide a mailing address to receive your prize.

The raffle drawing will take place one week following the close of the survey.

Your participation in this research is voluntary. Your decision whether or not to participate will not affect your current or future relations with Wilmington University. If you decide to participate, you are free to withdraw at any time without affecting that relationship.
