The former Methodist Church building in Moline, KS has been vacant since June 2022. The building has been donated to Elk County for community use. Several community members attended open house events in November called “Tour and Talk” and gave their ideas. The purpose of this survey is to gather feedback on those ideas.

1.Three main ideas have emerged for how the building might be used. When you think about the future of the building, which of the following ideas do you like the most?

HOUSING: This option would turn the building into housing of some sort. It could be apartments, a duplex, or a single-family home. Housing is a need in the community, and this building could be used to help meet that need. (Note: Of the three options, this one is likely to be the most expensive.)

GROUP LODGING/RETREAT SPACE: This option would turn the building into a space that groups could use for different types of retreats/events. Some examples include quilting or scrapbooking retreats or family reunions. The space could also be used as a venue for events like weddings and other parties/celebrations. This would provide a regular source of revenue generation and would provide benefit to the community.

MAKERSPACE/COMMERCIAL KITCHEN: This option would utilize the basement as a commercial or catering kitchen where companies or individuals could produce food items for sale. The main floor would become a “maker space” with various pieces of equipment, such as sewing, quilting and embroidery machines, woodworking equipment, laser engraver, plasma cutter, vinyl cutter, etc. Equipment would be acquired through donation, grants, or purchase and would be selected based on user demand. The kitchen and maker space would generate revenue from memberships or day-use fees. Classes or meetings could also be held in the building.
