Dear parent(s)/caregiver(s),

Thank you for your interest in the Kids Intensive Language Training (KILT) program in the Speech, Language and Hearing Department at Edinboro University.  This program is an intensive, three-hour, four day a week, language program for children with hearing loss. The program is both group and individual-based and involves the use of both a bimodal/bilingual approach (American Sign Language and written English) and listening and spoken language principles to encourage children to become independent communicators.

In order to apply for enrollment to KILT and/or to be placed on the waiting list, parents/caregivers must complete the online case history form (below). Please note that you will not be able to stop and save your progress once you have begun.  For this initial application, the following questions may be answered without referring to your child’s medical records.  Once the initial application is reviewed, you may be asked to provide additional information related to your child’s speech and language goals and/or audiological documentation.  Requested information may include documentation from medical and/or educational professionals including speech-language pathologists, psychologists, occupational therapists, special educators, audiologists, etc.

Provided there are available spots in the program, you will be contacted to set up a family visit.  The family visit will last between 30 and 60 minutes and will take place at the Governor George Leader Speech and Hearing Center on Edinboro University's main campus.  During this visit, you and your child will have an opportunity to tour the facilities and your child will have the chance to play in the classroom.  The visit will also allow time for us to answer your questions and to provide information about the structure of the KILT program.  Based on our conversation during that time and on observations of and interactions with your child, a determination will be made regarding whether or not your child is a good fit for the program.  You will be notified about our decision within one week of the visit.  If admission is offered, you will be given one week to decide whether or not to enroll your child.  Making choices quickly allows us a chance to contact the next family on the waiting list should spots continue to be available.

The final step in the application process is submitting a deposit ($100) and signing the KILT contract.  The deposit will be deducted from the cost of tuition at the time the tuition balance is submitted.

While children with a hearing loss will receive priority acceptance to the KILT program, we will also accept children who demonstrate a speech and/or language delay in the absence of other significant conditions.  We reserve the right to accept children on the basis of the clinical needs of our students and not necessarily in the order applications were received.  However, we do attempt to contact families in order as much as possible.  Please assist us in being as fair as possible by replying promptly to offers for a classroom visit.

Again, thank you for your interest in the KILT program.  Feel free to contact either Jane Puhlman (Kilt director) or Cindy Reyes-Pabon (clinic director) with any questions.

 Sincerely,

Jane Puhlman, Ph.D., CCC-SLP│Assistant Professor                     Cindy Reyes, CCC-SLP│Clinic Director
