EUCIC observerships

• The institution eligible exists for at least for 4 years and performs routine activities in:
o Infection control/hospital hygiene (IC/HH)
o Clinical microbiology (CM)
o Infectious diseases (ID)
• Observerships may last
o 1 day
o 1 week
o 1 month in accordance with the institution
• The programme of the observerships and topics covered should be clearly defined and be available for the trainees.
• The institution must already be providing academic courses and/or teaching for medical trainees in the fields of CM, ID, IC/HH and possibly public health. Aside from universities, national reference centres, for example, fulfilling the mentioned criteria may also apply.
• The institution must provide the meta-competence which results from an established inter-professional IPC network. A collaborating and working network between the divisions IC/HH, CM and ID should already be in place and daily aspects and services related to IPC should be solved by this inter-professional network.
• Infection control core competencies (for details see the full programme) are provided respective of the specialty of the department (IC/HH, CM, ID, public health) and include the following areas of focus:
o Area 1 – Epidemiology and transmission of healthcare-associated infections
o Area 2 – Microbiological diagnostic skills
o Area 3 – Antibiotic therapy and antibiotic stewardship programmes
o Area 4 – Practical IPC skills
o Area 5 – Development and implementation of IPC programmes
o Area 6 – Occupational health
o Area 7 – Scientific and managerial implementation
o Area 8 – Data analysis, management and publication
o Area 9 – Surveillance
o Area 10 –Meta-competence and European competence
o Area 11 – Technical hygiene – methods and assessments

Every EUCIC trainee can apply for an observership at the center by email. The center must provide a list of activities they will provide for the trainee; local or English .The center will send the trainees and also EUCIC a letter of acceptance, a certificate of completion and a review.For two weeks observership EUCIC will contribute €500 to the center.One observership with a duration of two weeks will substitute one local module.
