Why focus on DEI?
The major issues tackled by those providing healthcare and direct social services can include populations dealing with poverty, homelessness, mass incarceration, education,  and immigration, in addition to the presenting healthcare issues. These issues are often structurally shaped by race, class, and gender, among other factors. For this reason, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are critical values for any organization focused on healthcare.

Embracing DEI as organizational values and intentionally translating these into practice deepens organizational impact. Data shows that a diverse workforce boosts decision-making quality, fosters innovation, and brings unique perspectives that advance the nonprofit’s mission. In addition, an evolving sociopolitical environment has heightened the vulnerability of various groups — immigrants, Muslims, people of color, women, and LGBTQIA individuals — reinforcing the need for more innovative approaches to tackling inequity from the inside-out.
