PROJECT TITLE: Physical impairments in individuals with ankle osteoarthritis compared to healthy controls.
INVESTIGATORS: Miss. Munira Al Mahrouqi, Dr. Michelle Smith, Dr. David MacDonald and Prof. Bill Vicenzino.
What is the study about?
You are invited to participate if you either have ankle pain and stiffness, have ankle osteoarthritis, or you are participating as a healthy control (comparison) subject.
This study has three parts:
-Part A:completing 2 online surveys 20-30 minutes to complete each.
-Part B:Attending lab testing session/s at The University of Queensland, St Lucia Campus.
-Part C:Free x-ray examination at a local radiography clinic which should take not more than 30 minutes.
The studies are designed to address study aims in such a manner that each individual participant is exposed to the minimum possible degree of risk, inconvenience and discomfort.
In the lab testing, we are collecting detailed information about different physical measures (strength, joint mobility, walking, balance, instability, sensation and functional tasks) from individuals with ankle osteoarthritis and comparing this with the information obtained from healthy participants who do not have ankle pain or injury. Your participation is critical to the success of this project. Only through your responses we can better understand ankle osteoarthritis which will contribute to our knowledge of some of the physical limitations occurring in ankle osteoarthritis, and may help to develop more targeted strategies for managing ankle OA in the future.
What does it involve?
This short screening survey (10 minutes) aimed to verify if it is appropriate for you to participate in physical testing of the study. For this study, you are not eligible if you are pregnant, or if you have any other medical conditions that could affect your ability to participate in the testing. Once screened for eligibility, if you are eligible to participate in the study you will be contacted with further information.
You will attend The University of Queensland for clinical assessment, you will be reimbursed for your time and you will be asked to have an X-ray of your ankle. The radiological imaging assessment will be completed at a local radiology clinic. In addition, you will be asked to complete 2 online surveys.
Your rights as a participant in this study:
You are free to refuse to complete the survey without providing a reason. Deciding not to participate or to withdraw from the study will not influence current or future relationships with The University of Queensland and its clinics. All your personal information and data will be treated with the utmost confidentiality.
