1. Feedback Form

While the University's investigation continues regarding the King Hall racist graffiti incident on September 20th, it is important that we as a community come together to address the broader issues behind an incident such as this. Our Academic and Student Affairs leadership team has engaged in considerable dialogue with members of the campus community throughout the day of the incident, working to determine appropriate next steps to address this incident and its aftermath in the immediate and longer term.

As part of this process, President Smith met with more than 100 students at University House, joined by key university administrators, to listen to students' concerns and share the University's utmost priority of investigating and addressing this matter. We were asked directly if this would be "swept under the rug" and we assured those who attended, and assure you as you read this message that it will not.

As a result of the incident, the University has committed to both immediate, short-term actions regarding the racist graffiti on King Hall, as well as to a long-term action plan to address issues of race, inclusion, and diversity at EMU. We want to take this opportunity to share with the EMU committee the immediate, short-term action steps the institution has committed to:
  1. The University President and Chief of DPS have committed to increased police presence to ensure a sense of safety and security for the entire campus community, and for black students in particular as the targeted group in this incident.
  2. Anonymous Electronic Institutional Feedback Form
    • Every member of the campus community will have the opportunity to submit their questions, concerns, complaints, and requests for institutional action related to issues of race and diversity at EMU via this electronic form.
  3. A meeting will take place as soon as possible, but no later than early October
    • Members of the campus community will have the opportunity to engage with senior leaders around the racist graffiti incident and to further express questions, concerns, complaints, and requests for institutional action related to issues of race and diversity at EMU.
Through this Anonymous Electronic Feedback Form we want to hear from you and are listening. As a campus community, we want to be able to engage in dialogue around how we can continue to improve our campus in regards to issues of racial injustice, inclusion, and diversity. Please take a few moments and offer your valuable feedback to the Academic and Student Affairs leadership teams so that they can continue working to determine next steps to addressing this incident and its aftermath in the immediate and longer term.
