EMERGE: Leadership Shoals Class 2 Application (2023-24)

To develop tenacious, capable young professionals who will continue cultivating a region that supports entrepreneurship, business, and education.

To create opportunities to increase exposure of The Shoals comprehensive culture by constructing programming that demonstrates the region’s commitment to culture, quality of life, economic development, entrepreneurship, and growth.

Selection of class participants will highlight these main areas of focus:

a sincere commitment, motivation, and interest to live, work, and serve The Shoals;
an interest in education of regional growth and development;
an interest or intention to seek public office, serve on volunteer boards, or engage in community leadership roles;
a desire to advance in a career field or organization that serves The Shoals;
a recognition of the diversity that exists in The Shoals and a willingness to create bridges and not barriers.

Class participants will represent different industries, cultures, and organizations, and applicants will be reviewed by a committee to ensure least amount of unconscious bias possible. To accomplish this expectation, please provide answers to the best of your ability, comprehension, and honesty.

NOTE: Spouses will not be accepted into the same class but are encouraged to apply in alternate years.

November 14, 2023: 8:00 AM – 2:00 PM

          Quality of Life / Tourism

December 12, 2023: 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM

Advocacy & Government in The Shoals

January 16, 2024: 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM

          Unconscious Bias Training
*This session is mandatory for graduation

February 13, 2024: 8:00 AM – 2:00 PM

          Education in The Shoals

March 13, 2024: 8:00 AM – 2:00 PM

Service Day (Community & Non-Profit Engagement)

April 19, 2024: 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM

          Graduation

Additional Requirements for Graduation:
·      Attendance at one city council or county commission meeting with written summary
·      Attend a Shoals Chamber signature event
*These are to be completed on one’s own time.

COMMITMENT & MANDATORY ACTIVITIES

Graduates of EMERGE: Leadership Shoals are expected to attend all sessions as listed in the Schedule of Sessions.

Mandatory activities include
- Leadership Conference & Retreat
- Unconscious Bias Training

Additional Writing Requirements:
- to attend one city council or county commission meeting with written summary
- to attend a Shoals Chamber signature event

We realize that unforeseen emergencies arise, as well as the necessity of current COVID-19 protocols. You will be allowed to miss one full day (of non-mandatory days) and still graduate with your class. Please notify the Program Coordinator prior to any absence.

If a participant is not eligible to graduate due to absences, the participant will have one year to make up the missed session(s) and graduate with that year's class. It is the sole responsibility of the participant to find out the date(s) & time(s) for any make-up sessions.
