Program Overview

Program Description
A 10 day experiential program for Barry University and Siena Heights students to learn about sustainability and ecosystems in Michigan or Florida. Through the lens of environmental stewardship, the program will offer hands on activities, with service trips and day trips to local points of interest.  Students selected to participate in this summer experience are expected to implement sustainability initiatives at their universities upon completion of the two week program.

Students can apply to the trip in Michigan OR Florida OR both

Trip Dates:
Michigan May 13-23, 2019
  • May include experiences at Siena Heights University, Adrian Dominican Motherhouse, Permaculture Gardens, Farmer's Market, Great Lakes, Detroit Urban Farming, Apiaries, etc.
Florida August 13-23, 2019
  • May include experiences at Barry University, Nova Southeastern, Frost Museum, Florida Keys, Everglades, Beaches, Yellow Green Market, Earth N Us Farm, Urban Greenworks, etc. 

Trip Costs: Travel, Housing and Meals are covered at no expense to students
Deposit: A $200.00 refundable deposit is required to hold your spot for the trip. Students will receive their deposit back once they complete the trip in full. Students will lose their deposit if they choose to withdraw after flights are housing are paid for. 

Requirements:
·        Minimum 3.0 grade point average preferred
·        Must be in good standing with the university
·        Must have at least two semesters left at Barry
·        Must attend 3 pre-trip meetings and post trip meetings as needed 
·        Must complete post-trip sustainability project at Barry during the following academic year
·        Must complete all application questions

Application Deadline:  Friday, December 14th 

During this online application, you will be asked to complete the following 3 application questions. It is recommended that you prepare them before initiating the online application process. 
  • Describe any involvement or interest you have had in environmental sustainability in the past? 250-300 words
  • Describe any leadership experience you have? 250-300 words
  • Describe what sustainability projects you would like to implement or engage in at Barry University in the future?
Although no previous experience in environmental sustainability is required, all participants must have an interest in learning and a commitment to getting involved in these initiatives upon their return.
