Symposium on the Power of Data Behind Black Health

Deadline to Apply: June 1, 2023

This symposium explores the Power of Data Behind Black Health and how to develop equitable solutions for healthier communities.

When: This 2-day in-person Symposium will be held on June 8-9, 2023. On June 8, from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm, we will host a poster session and welcome reception. On June 9, from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm, we will convene an all-day Symposium.

About: Symposium participants will engage in multidisciplinary discussions that explore how to advance artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) approaches that improve health outcomes and address health disparities, in particular, for those from Black communities. Topics include AI/ML approaches that address health disparities, the impact of cultural insensitivity in AI/ML algorithms and models, and methodologies that promote transparency and mitigate bias in AI/ML algorithms and models. Faculty, staff, and graduate from Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) and community and health professionals in the southeastern region (AL, FL, GA, PR, SC, and VI) are encouraged to attend.

This Symposium is co-hosted by the Atlanta University Center (AUC) Data Science Initiative and the AIM-AHEAD Southeast Hub at Morehouse School of Medicine, in partnership with the National Data Science Alliance.

Agenda: You may access the agenda here.

Symposium Goals:
  • Facilitate multidisciplinary collaboration to advance AI/ML approaches that improve health outcomes and address health disparities, in particular, for those from underrepresented communities.
  • Recruit consortium members in our region to establish and expand academic, community, and corporate partnerships with an emphasis on recruiting those from underrepresented communities and those from Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs).
  • Form collaborations with distinguished underrepresented researchers and those from underrepresented communities on topics at the forefront of AI/ML-focused health sciences that impact racial and ethnic minority populations.
