The idea behind the programme

Rethinking Parks is a £1M fund to find and support organisations and partnerships to develop, implement and spread new approaches to sustaining and making the most of UK public parks. The fund is a partnership between the Big Lottery Fund, Heritage Lottery Fund and Nesta.

Over the next 18 months, Darlington has been selected to take part in the Rethinking Parks programme, and is one of eleven successful programmes in the UK. It is the only programme selected from the North East to implement and test its idea on how parks can continue to be improved and thrive into the future.

Groundwork NE & Cumbria will be working in partnership with Darlington Borough Council, Darlington Cares and the ‘Friends of’ South Park, The Denes and North Park.

The aim is to develop strategic long term relationships, creating varied volunteer opportunities to inject new skills into the park and utilise these skills to manage and maintain the three largest parks in Darlington.
