2020 has been a challenging year for all those seeking to advance social change. The COVID-19 pandemic changed our world dramatically and left foundations rushing to execute emergency plans, assemble resources, and reassess strategies. The public outcry and protests against the unjust murder of Black people have underscored the racial inequities in our private and public systems, prompting funders to raise their collective consciousness and do more to directly address systemic racism.

In an effort to understand both the pressures facing the philanthropic field and how we are collectively responding, Philanthropy California, the Council on Foundations, and Dalberg Advisors have launched a new survey. Your participation in this survey - which can be completed in under 15 minutes - will help shed light on the immediate and longer-term implications of both crises, including how philanthropic spending is shifting and what issue areas may be affected by an influx or decrease in resources.

The findings will be shared widely across the field to identify opportunities for funders to adapt their strategies and work together to address key pain points or gaps. This survey builds on a broader global survey conducted by Dalberg Advisors in April 2020 covering ~75 foundations with over $10B in annual programming.

The survey has four sections. Section A focuses on shifts to your resourcing & funding, Section B focuses on the racial equity lens to your response, Section C focuses on operational shifts, and Section D on longer-term strategies. Each section will take approximately 3-4 minutes to complete.

We would like to invite you, or your immediate deputy, to complete the survey by July 17, 2020. If you have questions about completing the survey please contact Kristen Scott Kennedy at the Council on Foundations (Kristen.scottkennedy@cof.org), Phuong Pham at Philanthropy California (phuong@socalgrantmakers.org) or the Dalberg team led by Shruthi Jayaram and Marcus Haymon (jem@dalberg.com)
