Fall Semester Faculty and Staff Reading Group: Critical Dialogues in Latinx Studies Application |
The Interdisciplinary Studies Department, in partnership with the Media and Communication department, the Inclusive Excellence Office, the Center for Research and Creative Activities, and the Berry Library, invites faculty and staff to join a reading and discussion group of the just released book Critical Dialogues in Latinx Studies edited by Ana Y. Ramos-Zayas and Mérida M. Rúa. This volume “sheds light on the diversity and complexity of the everyday lives of Latinx populations, the political economic structures that shape enduring racialization and cultural stereotyping, and the continuing efforts to carve out new lives.”
The goal of this group is to read new scholarship, deepen our learning about the subject matter, reflect on how it impacts and shapes our work, and create a summary of some of our learning. Emphasis is on learning and process. This initiative aims to enrich our collective understanding of Latinx lives and identities as Salem State moves towards obtaining HSI (Hispanic Serving Institution) status.
The group will meet on Zoom every other Monday from 10 -11 am. Participants must commit to attend a minimum of 5 out of the 6 meetings. Dates are: 10/4; 10/18; 11/1; 11/15; 11/29; 12/13.
Up to 20 spots are available for faculty and up to 20 spots are available for staff. Registration begins immediately and will close when all spots are taken. Documentation can be provided to staff members as needed by their supervisors.
The books are being provided by the Library and the Office of Inclusive Excellence and additional support is provided by the departments of Interdisciplinary Studies and Media and Communication as well as the Center for Research and Creative Activities.
Book pickup will be at the Berry library the week of 9/20, with more details about that sent to participants in advance. At that time details about participation, sequence of reading, and group guidelines will be distributed.
