Purpose: This survey assesses the current use of digitalisation and artificial intelligence (“AI”) in the work of qualified solicitors in Ireland, across private practice and in-house legal functions (public and private sector). The findings will inform a published report for Law Society Skillnet and Skillnet Ireland, and will be used to design targeted training and supports for solicitors and their employees. By participating in this survey you are helping shape the training Law Society Skillnet develops for the profession.
Anonymity: This survey is anonymous. No identifying information is collected unless you choose to provide your email address at the end of the survey for a follow-up interview. Responses will be analysed and reported in aggregate only. Responses are collected and processed through Microsoft Excel and will be retained for a period of five years before deletion.
Definitions used in this survey:
'Digitalisation': means using digital tools to change how legal services are delivered and managed, for example matter management, document management, secure client portals, e-signatures, workflow, secure communications, e-discovery, and online payments. Note: Digitisation (not Digitalisation) means turning paper or non-digital information into a digital format. For example, scanning hard copy files. This survey focuses mainly on digitalisation.
'AI tools': means software that can do tasks that usually need human judgement or understanding of language. Examples include tools that draft text using generative AI, summarise documents, help with legal research, review documents and pull out key information, transcribe audio, translate text, and run intelligent search. Simple rules-based automation are not included in this definition. For example, setting your outlook inbox ‘rules’ so that emails from a particular sender are automatically moved into a named folder falls into rules-based automation.
'Use': includes direct use by fee earners, indirect use by support staff on legal matters, or embedded AI features inside mainstream products used by the legal workplace.
