HBCU SP20 Tour Important Information

Thank you for your interest in attending the SP20 HBCU Tour March 29th – April 3rd, 2020! 

The following section contains important information regarding the tour, expectations, and costs. Please read it carefully before beginning the application.

Question Title

* 1. The tour will be led by Educational Student Tours and will visit Southern University (Baton Rouge, LA); Dillard University, Xavier University of Louisiana (New Orleans, LA); Florida A&M University (Tallahassee, FL); Fort Valley State University (Fort Valley, GA); Clark-Atlanta University, Spelman or Morehouse College (Atlanta, GA). Students from DVC will be accompanied by a DVC employee chaperone.

If selected to attend, all participants are required to attend a pre-departure orientation meeting with tour directors.

Are you able to attend a mandatory pre-departure orientation meeting, the week of March 16th 2020?

* 2. At this mandatory pre-departure orientation meeting, students will be required to sign an excursion waiver, consent/release and medical consent forms, provide copies of their official identification (e.g., valid CADL, Passport, Birth Certificate & ID) for airline ticketing purposes.

The DVC chaperone and tour directors will receive copies of this information.  In addition, students must complete a pre-trip survey and a post-trip survey. 

Additionally, all students who participate are required to do a presentation about their experience during Spring 2020 semester (Umoja co-coordinators will support you with this). 

Are you able to participate in a presentation about your experience of the HBCU SP20 Tour during the SP20 semester?  

Question Title

* 3. The HBCU SP20 Tour will depart from Oakland, CA to New Orleans, LA on Sunday, March 29, 2020.

The return flight will be from Atlanta, GA and return to Oakland on Friday, April 3, 2020. 

Are you able to attend the HBCU SP20 Tour, as it will take place during DVC’s spring break?

Question Title

* 4. DVC, will attend this trip with our sister colleges, Contra Costa and Los Medanos, as well as other colleges from California (approximately 45 students total).

Students will be housed in hotel rooms, 3 students per room, and each student will have his/her own bed. Depending on the gender breakdown of DVC students selected to attend, DVC students may also have a roommate from another college.

Are you willing and able to, possibly roommate with another student (of same gender) from another college?

* 5. Once in New Orleans, students will travel in tour buses to all of the colleges and historic sites. 

Are you willing and able to travel on a bus for extended periods?

* 6. The cost of the tour is $1699 per student, and will be paid for by DVC Student Equity funds. Since this trip is funded with college and grant funds, students who are selected to attend must sign a financial agreement as a condition of participating. Part of that financial agreement condition states that any cancellations must be submitted in writing to Mrs. Yvonne and Bro. Eric no later than January 24, 2020 (email is acceptable). 

Do you agree, that, if you do not cancel by the deadline, you will be responsible for the full cost of $1699?

Also, do you understand that a hold will be placed on your account for the full amount and you will not be able to register for classes, order transcripts, etc., until the cost has been repaid?

* 7. For students who are selected to attend, the only costs are:
1. Transportation to and from the Oakland Airport (parking/gas/tolls are not paid for by the college),

2. $10 tip for the tour bus driver (cash required),

3. Breakfast on March 29th,

4. Dinner on April 3rd and

5. The cost of any souvenirs and/or snacks you choose to purchase, and
any charges made for room service, toll calls, mini-bar/fridge, movies, Wi-Fi, etc., at the hotel. 

Do you understand and agree to cover your own cost of transportation to and from Oakland Airport, required cash tip for bus driver and be responsible for your own souvenir(s), snack(s), and/or hotel incidentals?
