SLSNR Support Services | SurfCom

SurfCom is Surf Life Saving’s communications and dispatch service which operates 24/7 every day of the year from the Auckland Marine Rescue Centre.

SurfCom Operators manage major incidents and keep accurate records of communications. They also monitor incoming patrol information as well as weather and water quality updates.

SurfCom is the first point of contact for Police, St John and Coastguard for incidents occurring at beaches or in the break-zone.

Operators also manage initial media inquiries and package patrol information for press releases at the end of each day.

Becoming a SurfCom Operator

The prerequisites for this role are:
- Surf Lifeguard Award/Patrol Support Award
- 18 years old
- VHF Award
- First Aid Level 2
- Able to commute to the Auckland Marine Rescue Center
- Successful Police Vetting
- SLS Member

Required skills and attributes are:
- Sound computer skills
- Calm under pressure
- Ability to multi-task
- Leadership & decision making qualities
- A background within Surf Lifesaving or understanding of Surf Lifesaving operations
