Informed Consent for Participants in Research Projects Involving Human Subjects

I. THE PURPOSE OF THE RESEARCH

You are being invited to participate in a research study titled “The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on LGBTQ+ College Students.” This study is being conducted by Amy DeWitt and Christopher Bryant from Shepherd University. Approximately 300 respondents will be asked to participate. The purpose of the project is to examine, via survey research, perceptions of the challenges LGBTQ+ college students faced during the global pandemic.

II. PROCEDURES

You will be asked to complete a survey that should take approximately 20 minutes. Questions will ask about the challenges faced with social connectedness during a time of enforced social distance and isolation.

III. RISKS

We believe there are no known risks associated with this research study; however, as with any related activity the risk of a breach of confidentiality is always possible. To the best of our ability your answers in this study will remain confidential. We will minimize any risks by not asking for names or other identifiers, maintaining all hardcopies of data under lock and key, and redacting any unsolicited identifiers when responses are referenced. In the extremely rare event of research related injury, including breach of confidentiality, you may contact Dr. Jason Best, IRB Chair, 304.876.5331.

IV. BENEFITS OF THIS PROJECT

We value your willingness to participate. While there are no direct benefits to participants, shared findings may inform college administrators about student needs, and suggested strategies could aid in building more inclusive and safe campus communities.

V. EXTENT OF ANONYMITY AND CONFIDENTIALITY

The results of this study will be kept strictly confidential. Your name will not be requested on any of the surveys. No reference will be made within our report that could link you to the data nor will you ever be identified as a participant in the project.

VI. COMPENSATION

You will not be compensated for participating in this study.
