Gov Whitmer's Gas Tax Proposal

During Governor Whitmer’s March 5, 2019 budget proposal, she proposed increasing the state’s gas tax from $0.26 per gallon to $0.45 per gallon.  This proposed increase comes at a time when Michigan’s roads and bridges continue to deteriorate.

The American Society of Civil Engineers recently stated that Michigan’s roads were rated as a D- and bridge rated as a C-.

In a 2015, a national transportation research group issued a TRIP report that estimated that our bad roads are costing drivers $4.6 billion a year. That's about $646 per driver.

It is worth noting that the passage of the 2015 road funding package will increase state funding for local roads and bridges, state roads and bridges, and transit from $2.2 billion in 2015 to nearly $3.7 billion in 2023. While this additional funding has allowed the state to move forward with numerous projects that otherwise may have remained unfunded, there are many projects across the state will not move forward without additional transportation funding.

Gov Whitmer’s proposed $0.45 per gallon tax would raise more than $ 2 billion annually to fix Michigan’s roads and bridges.

There is no doubt that Michigan’s crumbling infrastructure is in need of additional funding.  In an effort to gauge the support for this investment option.  The MAA Governmental Relations Committee is conducting a survey of the membership to determine the level of support.
