The Learning Program provides a wonderful opportunity for parents and young children ages 4-8 with Down syndrome. The Learning Program was created by the Down Syndrome Foundation of Orange County to bridge the gap between research and practice for teaching early and foundational literacy skills to students with Down syndrome.

The Learning Program is designed to supplement traditional education and includes monthly sessions for parents and students.  While students learn, play and explore with highly qualified educational staff, parents are taught about early literacy fundamentals, mathematics, school advocacy, and much more. The goal of the program is to help parents be first-teachers in helping support their son/daughter's educational journey.

The Down Syndrome Guild of Greater Kansas City has received a generous donation to award up to 5 families with a full scholarship for the 2016-2017 Learning Program. The scholarship amount will be $200 per family which would cover the annual cost of the program. This scholarship gift is intended to help parents who have financial constraints that would otherwise not allow them to participate in the Learning Program.

Following the Learning Program year, you may be asked to submit a report to The Down Syndrome Guild of Greater Kansas City describing your family’s experiences with this program. Your report may be in oral or written format, it should reflect the changes and knowledge both you and your child gained through your attendance. Report suggestions: newsletter article, speak at a parents discussion session, make a presentation to the Board of Directors, written report for Board members.

Scholarships for the Learning Program will be awarded on the basis of the applicants ability and desire to attend ALL Learning Program sessions, as well as their willingness to support and promote the Down Syndrome Guild of Greater Kansas City.  Learning Program sessions meet the second Saturday of each month from Sept to June. Sessions are: Sept 10, Oct 8, Nov. 12, Dec 10, Jan 14, Feb. 11, March 11, April 8, May 13, June 10. For more information, please visit www.kcdsg.org/learningprogram.
