For the purposes of this survey Domestic and Family Violence is defined any behaviour, in a family relationship, which is violent, threatening, coercive or controlling, causing a person to live in fear. It usually manifests as part of a pattern of controlling or coercive behaviour. (It Stops Here, 2014).

In some instances questions have been designed to differentiate between domestic violence/intimate partner violence (i.e. violence perpetrated by a partner or ex-partner) and family violence (i.e. violence perpetrated by a family member or another person in the household who is not an intimate partner).
