1. Can there be humor in abortion?

Our Truths-Nuestras Verdades, a pro-voice magazine, is delving into uncharted waters. Our Winter 2008 Humor Issue will explore humor as a healing tool, find out whether there can be “funny moments” in an abortion experience, and assess abortion humor in pop culture.

We are not looking to mock abortion, the women who have them, or those who fight for or against abortion. Instead, we want to hear women’s voices and explore this question: Can humor help unlock the stigma around abortion?

We respect your privacy. If you take our survey, please be assured that your responses may appear anonymously in our Humor Issue. You do not have to answer every question, just the ones you want to. Thanks for participating. Your voice counts!

* 1. I am (choose one or both)

* 2. In 10 words or less, describe how you think or feel about past abortion/s now?

* 3. Did laughter and humor ever help you feel better or cope with your abortion experience? Tell us about it. Was there something about your experience that you found funny or humorous? (For example, how you got pregnant, or something that happened before or after.)

* 4. Have you ever told anybody about this “funny” experience? If yes, describe how this person reacted and how you felt after you told your story. If you’ve never told the story to anyone, why not?

* 5. Have you seen a TV show, movie, publication or comedian use abortion as a way to make people laugh? What was said? Did you think it was funny? Did you relate to it personally? How? If not, what’s missing?

* 6. How, if at all, do you think abortion humor affects public perceptions about abortion and the women who have them?

* 7. Is there anything else you would like to add about humor and abortion?

* 8. For demographic purposes, how would you describe yourself, i.e, your race, religion, age, etc…?

Thanks so much for taking our survey! Your voice counts, whether you answered one question or all of them. Your answers may appear anonymously in the next issue of Our Truths-Nuestras Verdades. The Humor Issue will be published this winter.
