Small Scale Forestry Safety Training

1.The Forestry Industry Safety Council (FISC) has, until now, been concentrating on improving the safety of the work that goes on in large-scale forests which make up about 70% of the wood production from plantation forests.

This year FISC will be working with the NZ Farm Forestry Association to identify what safety resources are needed by the more than 14,000 small-scale forest owners who control the balance of the production.

It is important that any resources that FISC develops are useful and targeted at the right areas.   To assist in this, we have put together this questionnaire with the aim of understanding which activities small scale foresters undertake themselves (or with friends or family), and therefore need advice about; and which they contract out to other people, who are likely to be covered by industry training systems.

First a couple of questions about you.
To which NZFFA Branch do you belong ?
2.We recognise that NZFFA members have many different interests.  For the purposes of this survey, we are using three categories to describe the reason they are involved in forestry:
  • Farming - people whose prime interest and business is in farming and who see trees as complementing their farming activities.
  • Passion - tree growers who have a fundamental interest in growing trees, alternative species, etc.
  • Investing – tree growers whose primary interest is return on their investment in trees.

If you had to choose ONE of these categories to describe your interests, which would you choose?
3.Now the meat of the questionnaire.  In the following questions, we want to know what activities you undertake yourself or with family or friends so we can see what safety-related training we should be providing.
