APSCE Student Wing Thematic Talk 1
Big Data and Learning Analytics: Developing an Evidence-based Perspective to Educational Research
Speaker: Prof. Hiroaki Ogata, Kyoto University, Japan

Technology-driven education has redefined various learning processes including learning content design, delivery, interaction, and assessment. As learners make use of these learning tools, huge amount of data is being generated which include information on: engagement, performance, and other metrics that express various learning actions or commitments. These present opportunities to use such data to improve learning, construct user models, achieve personalization and make a positive impact on the performance of learners. This talk will focus on the use of learning analytics processes and tools to detect and/or solve problems in education. To demonstrate some of these processes and tools, specific examples will be provided. Finally, this talk concludes with discussions on some key areas in the field that pose some interesting problems yet to be solved.

APSCE Student Wing Thematic Talk 2
Opportunities and Challenges of Technological Appropriation for Language Educators
Speaker: Prof. Vivien Lin, National Yunlin University of Science and Technology, Taiwan

Technology provides immense opportunity for language learning. However, applying various forms of technology teaching may be challenging for language educators. Based on experiences in cross-disciplinary research, this talk will introduce several empirical studies from an instructional design perspective. Specifically, the use of IoT sensing technology for ubiquitous, robot-assisted, and toy-based language learning across educational levels in Taiwan will be reported. In addition, evaluation of these technology-enhanced language learning scenarios will be provided with criteria from the language learning domain. The talk will conclude with recommendations about how to best appropriate new forms of technology in language learning for children and young adults in English as a Foreign Language contexts.
