A Cross-Sectional Survey of UK Primary Care Practitioners’ Approach to Chronic Gastrointestinal Disease in Dogs and Cats

Participant Information

You are invited to participate in a research study exploring how UK primary-care veterinarians manage dogs and cats presenting with chronic gastrointestinal signs.

This study is being carried out by researchers from the University of Nottingham School of Veterinary Medicine and Science (SVMS) and Synapse Animal Health Consultancy, and has been commissioned by Carus Animal Health. It has received ethical approval from the University of Nottingham SVMS Committee for Animal Research and Ethics (Ref: 4700 201026).

The study aims to describe real-world diagnostic and management approaches to chronic gastrointestinal disease in dogs and cats, and to explore the clinical and practical challenges veterinarians encounter in primary-care practice, as well as areas where additional support or resources may be valued.
Eligibility:To participate in this research you must:
  1. Be over 18 years of age.
  2. Be a registered veterinary surgeon currently working in clinical practice in the UK. This includes veterinary surgeons working in independent, corporate, charity and university practices, as well as locum veterinary surgeons working across multiple practices.
  3. Work predominantly in primary-care/first-opinion practice seeing at least dogs +/- cats. Veterinary surgeons with a mixed first- and second-opinion caseload, including certificate holders, are eligible provided their clinical work is predominantly first opinion. Mixed-practice veterinary surgeons are also eligible where small-animal work forms part of their caseload. Vets seeing only cats are not eligible to take part in this survey.
  4. Have managed at least one case of chronic gastrointestinal disease in a dog +/- cat within the past 12 months. For the purposes of this survey, “chronic” is defined as clinical signs that have been ongoing or recurrent for at least 3 weeks.
