This training is designed for elementary teachers, administrators, and parents. Once the application is submitted, the YWCA NNJ Allocations committee will decide which schools/districts will receive this free training. If your district is selected, the YWCA NNJ will work with your staff to schedule the series during the school year at a mutually agreed-upon time/date. Training description: Three one-hour virtual sessions providing your staff the language, tools, and support to address race in the elementary classroom. This training includes the trainer, technical, logistical, and marketing support. This training will be accompanied by a two-session, one and half hour virtual parent workshop, also at no cost to the district.



Workshop #1

Focuses solely on proactive race talk, background/grounding in research and modeling strategies, and practicing in break-out groups.

Workshop #2

Brings proactive strategies to responsive scenarios and introduces a tool/structure for giving supportive/non-judgmental feedback.

Workshop #3

Reviews the first two sessions and enables participants to practice using the tool/structure in small groups, either focusing on a scenario on race which they would like feedback on OR possibly regarding more a curriculum planning question.



 
-Tools and Resources
RRCC adapts and creates tools and resources as needed to learn from elementary teachers and parents to support this critical work. Sample tools may include:

-Race conscious lesson planning processes to support equity

-Consultancies for teacher teams to review classroom culture

-The planning process to identify a way to bring a race-conscious lens to everyday practice and curriculum

-Sample lessons to support conversations about race





 

The following are the criteria that must be met by applicants:

·Must be a NJ based school in Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Morris or Passaic Counties.

·Must guarantee attendance of a minimum number of teachers and administrators.

·Must agree to share parent workshop schedule with all parents/guardians to encourage registration

·Must maintain regular communication with the YWCA Northern New Jersey representative to coordinate schedules and assist in data collection via pre-and post-survey.

·Must help promote your participation in this essential training via website and social media channels

·  Must comply with YWCA Northern New Jersey guidelines
